This is arguably the first kid song I wrote. My 3 or 4 year old son Andrew (soon to be 30!) looked up at some birds flying by and said very wisely, “You know dad, birds don’t carry suitcases. They just fly!” At the time I was struggling with a bunch of financial craziness and so while the song is funny and interactive of kids, it also works on a deeper level for the grownups in the audience. It reminds us to focus on the people who are most important not the “things”.
Eventually, this song led to an entire program called “Birds Don’t Carry Suitcases!” Drums, Songs and Stories about Birds. So we can cover natural history as well as folktales all in one educational and entertaining program for schools or libraries…
Enjoy!

Birds
Song #108 | October 1988 | CD: New Songs/Ancient Stories
Birds don’t carry suticases or shopping bags
Birds don’t pledge allegiance to the flag
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not buy real estate or fancy cars
Birds do not watch people through binoculars
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not chew bubble gum or smoke cigars
Birds do not play Mississippi Delta blues guitar
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds do not dream dreams in foreign languages
Birds do not crave peanutbutter sandwiches
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
Birds don’t surf the interent or watch TV
Birds do not like cages they’re a lot like me
They just fly.
Fly, fly fly
Birds just fly
